Freeview is a free digital TV package that is available to people living in the UK. It is not, like many people say, available outside the UK especially Spain. You cannot receive Freeview in Spain. Freeview is a UK only digital television system that is transmitted from the land based television transmitter masts, like Emley Moor and Crystal Palace. The signals from these terrestrial transmitters are not strong enough to reach Spain.

Many UK TV channels are available on "free to air" satellite systems. British expats around Europe can watch their favourite UK TV channels for free via free to air satellite in Spain. Free to air means that there is no monthly subscription to pay, unlike the pay TV channels offered on satellite packages offered by Sky TV.

Freesat is the name of a brand of satellite receivers designed to receive these free to air UK satellite television channels. You can also use a Sky digibox or any other digital satellite receiver to receive the free to air signals. A Sky digibox without a viewing card will still be able to receive BBC and ITV channels, and all the channels a Freesat receiver can receive.

You can receive many of the UK free to air TV channels by installing a small satellite dish and a digital satellite set top box. However, due to the frequencies used, the main UK TV channels such as BBC and ITV may not be available on these small satellite dishes, and therefore much larger satellite dishes will be required, from 1.8m to 2.4m.

Spain does have its own version of Freeview, called Television Digital Terrestrial - TDT. Using a TDT set top box, you are able to receive around 30 digital Spanish television channels via your TV aerial on your roof. The digital aspect allows a much clearer picture than the old analogue TV system, and has the option to change the Spanish dubbing soundtrack on UK and USA imported programmes into the original version. It should also be noted that some UK "Freeivew" set top boxes do not work in Spain correctly, as they are programmed for the UK TV service and not the TDT service.

I already have a UK Sky box, will this work in Spain?

Yes, almost all modern day Sky boxes from the UK work fine in Spain. Our satellite engineer will carry out a series of tests on your equipment to confirm if it is working before starting an installation. Keep in mind, although we offer a full 12 months warranty for all work carried out by us, we are unable to offer a warranty of any kind on equipment we did not supply. Also please note that the dish you had in Britain is far too small to be of any use here, so a new, larger satellite dish will be needed in Spain and regional variations here can determine just how big a dish will be required. I don't have a Sky box or Satellite Dish, are you able to provide all the equipment necessary for me to watch Sky TV in Spain?

Yes of course, our satellite engineers carry all the equipment necessary to get you up and running, which includes all types of Sky boxes and the Dishes required.

What Sky TV channels will I receive in Spain?

If you still maintain an active account with Sky, you can expect to receive all the Sky TV channels, the same as you had back in the UK.

Will I be able to pause and record Sky TV in Spain?

In order to pause and record Sky TV (Sky+,HD+) you will need to have a Satellite dish installation that supports this particular feature, this is because the dish must be able to receive two signals, one to stream live TV and the other to feed your recorder.

Do I still need to pay Sky a monthly fee to view Sky TV in Spain?

You only need an active Sky TV subscription if you want to watch the subsciption channels such as Sky Movies, Sky Sports, Documentaries, etc and the recording facities of Sky+/HD+. If you do not have an active Sky subscription you can still expect to receive all free to view channels, including the British digital channels such as BBC1, BBC2, ITV, Channel 4, CH5, etc.

What type of reception can I expect from my Sky TV in Spain?

Depending on your location and equipment you can expect an excellent reception of all major Sky TV in Spain. Although please keep in mind that all satellite signals experience issues during bad weather such as tropical storms and we have been known to have a few of them here in Spain.

How long will it take to install Sky TV at my villa?

Our skilled satellite engineers can usually complete your installation in a matter of hours providing they have access to all areas necessary to complete the installation.

I am renting a property, do I need permission from my landlord to install Sky TV?

Yes, we would always advise you to ask for permission before installing Sky TV as this does require installation of a large Satellite dish, used to receive the Sky TV signal. Most landlords are more than happy to let you do this, but they might ask that the dish is placed in a discreet location. Also in the case of apartment blocks and small estates, permission must be sourced from the community administrations representative. If this is the case, please mention this to our Satellite engineer before installation commences, because we are also experienced in dealing with the legal aspects of this and we speak the language fluently.

What happens if my Sky TV stops working?

We have been in business here for over 20 years and survived multiple recessions because we value our Customers and they, in return, value our care and attention to their needs. We provide all our customer with free telephone support 24 hours, 7 days a week and give a full 12 month warranty with all of our Sky installations.

I've had Sky TV installed by another company but its no longer working and they are not returning my calls?

Unfortunately, this is something we hear more and more of these days. This usually comes down to two reasons, firstly being that this other company is no longer in business or the most common reason being that they had to change their number to avoid all the other customers that they leave in a similar situation, due to their inferior workmanship. Our engineers are very experienced at putting a bad job right.

Of course we are happy to help you to get your system up and running again but it's important to understand that we can not offer a warranty for equipment provided by another company. Our skilled satellite engineers will first test your equipment to ensure its working and then carry out the work necessary to resolve the issue.

Please note: Our engineers will not be able to liaise with your previous installers, on your behalf, but when needed, can usually find avenues to communicate with the suppliers of the equipment and cards used by them.

Astra and Eurobird Satellites at 28.2° and 28.5°

All the UK English Channels broadcast by the English Television Companies are transmitted from Astra 2a, 2b at 28.2° and Eurobird at 28.5°. Each satellite has its own beams covering the UKdown to Spain. This group of satellites are 36,000 kilometers above the equator and the fit into an area of 53km wide, 77km high and 19km deep.

The owners of the TV programs are known as the "Rights Holders" and they sell or rent the programs to the Broadcasters on a condition that the program will only be viewed by their audience. This is easily implemented when the program is being transmitted by terrestrial TV. However when the program is transmitted by Satellite the control of viewership is usually by means of a set top box with an encrypted card. However in the case of the BBC and ITV that broadcast free TV to viewers who have already paid with a compulsory TV license, using an encrypted card wasn't an option. Consequently their control is to use the satellite Astra 2d with a spot beam that is tightly focused on the UK.

There is an additional factor where the signals are transmitted vertically and horizontally. When you reside within the designated footprint there is no difference between vertical and horizontal signals. However if you live in Valencia Province way beyond the footprint then the vertical signals are significantly stronger than the horizontal signals. Fortunately the channels with horizontal signals(channel 4,5 and BBC 2) are also broadcast with vertical signals. Please visit this page for alternatives. Fortunately for the viewers in Spain (at the present time) there is a shortage of transponders (devices on the satellite that transmit signals) on Astra 2d, consequently other satellites transmit UK TV channels with a wide beam.

There are numerous channels being broadcast on Astra 2a via the BSkyB network. The image on the left clearly shows this wide beam. The inner circle represents a dish size of 50 cms and the outer circle represents a dish size of 120 cms.

There are in fact two beams North and South and the North beam is not as strong as the South Beam for viewers in Valencia Province.

The Eurobird at 28.5° also has a wide beam and carries many UK Free to Air channels that are easily accessed by viewers in Valencia Province. To summarize, viewers in Valencia Province can receive a great deal of English TV without a huge dish. Using a Sky "Free to View Card" will give them ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 because they are transmitted via Sky on Astra 2a. Sky subscription cards deliver a a lot more TV. For those viewers in the Valencia Province wanting to view the BBC one and two channels have to invest in a 1.8 to 2.4 metre dish
